Sir Alex Ferguson, well aware that mega-bucks Chelsea have identified Richards as a potential target, will not want soccer's hottest property slipping from under his nose.
But the Blues are ready to offer the 18-year-old defender a pay rise to try to keep him - even though he's only 12 months into a four-year contract.
But any issues, including ongoing takeover talks, are firmly on the backburner at City as boss Stuart Pearce, who was earlier this month on the brink of the sack, and his under-achieving squad concentrate on winning the six points that are likely to ensure Premiership survival.
The club will have a traumatic close season with the potential takeover saga likely to be resolved and Pearce's long-term future sorted out.
If the mystery American consortium, which remains in prime position in a four-way battle, does buy a majority shareholding at Eastlands they have promised to hand the manager, be it Pearce or his replacement, £10m to rebuild the squad - a factor that could remove the need to sell Richards, pictured above playing for England on Saturday.
An offer close to the £21m received from Chelsea for Shaun Wright-Phillips - also a product of the Blues' academy - would give the City board another headache with a fans' backlash certain should they allow the supremely versatile Richards, the highest paid teenager in the club's history, to follow Wyn Davies and Tony Cotton across the great divide.
United, who remain in the driving seat to land Owen Hargreaves this summer, are playing their cards close to their chest but Fergie will be looking long term to find a challenger for long-serving Gary Neville.
Peter Barnes, who moved from City to United via Coventry, today urged Richards to stay at City, saying: "When I went to United it was from Coventry and a long time after I had been at City. Reds boss Dave Sexton, who was my England under-21 manager, would have liked to buy me but City would never have sold me directly to United.
"If I was Micah I would just sit tight at City no matter who said they wanted me and keep on learning my trade. He is liked by the fans and playing for the Blues has not done him any harm or stopped him winning England caps and I am sure City will still be in the Premiership next season.
"Anyone who left City for United would probably get stick for the rest of his life. But if the Reds do make an enquiry then City should quote a ridiculous price!"
Should Pearce consider selling Richards to United? Have your say.

A £20m fullback is something we can ill afford, a £20m centre forward is something we have a drastic need for.

I don't like the sound of these so called foreign investors. "£10 million to rebuild the squad" whoop de doo. City need at least 10 new players.

As to the title of this piece, frankly I don't believe a word that comes out of the Manchester City Boardroom anymore, and the plain facts are that if there is no takeover, then Micah will be sold. We are set to make an extra 10m on the new TV deal, but our wages bill has gone back up to 36m and we've just posted a half yearly defecit of 7.1m. The extra TV money therefore has already gone, and given that there's no way we're gonna survive another season in the Prem (and that's assuming we stay up) with the likes of Dickov, Beasley, Dabo, Corradi, Trabelsi and Hamann in the squad, then we're going to need some serious spending cash from somewhere, and with season ticket renewals standing at just 14000 so far, there's only one source available to us and like it or not that's to cash in on Micah. What makes it doubly soul destroying is that all this will do is just paper over the cracks again for another year, and as such it wouldn't surprise me to see Wardle use at least half of any money we were to get for Micah to cash in some of his loans, otherwise he may never get his money back. The only hope is that the 'mystery investor' turns out to be fact rather than fiction, but even on that score I'm not optimistic. It's gonna need a major player to invest in City, not just to wipe the debts (53m) and provide a transfer kitty (20m), but to make an over the odds bid to stop the four main, and entirely self interested, factions on the City Board (Lee, Boler, Wardle & Sky TV), playing one off against the other in the hope of forcing the share price up. It's funny, every time some foreign investor has bid for a club in the Premiership so far, their identities have become common knowledge fairly early on in proceedings, but with City, four months have passed now since this 'mystery investor' was announced at the AGM, and still no-one has the faintest clue who it is! Oh, doubtless Bertie Blue Nose and some of the other club stooges will be along to advise us all that that's because City are good at keeping their cards close to their chest, or because talks are STILL in their infancy, but I submit a simpler reason - they're complete nobodies (if they exist at all), who may just have enough to buy Wardle out of the hole he's got himself into, but won't have two brass farthings for anything else. If these talks were genuine and realistic, don't you think we'd have offered Micah a wage increase long ago in an effort to keep him at the club?
My heart wants to believe he'll still be with us next season, but given the mess we're in I don't think he can be, and on that score I suggest you get used to Pearce as well, cos no investor means no new manager, cos there's no way our Chairman is going to part company with the only manager in the Prem on a Conference salary and with no compensation clause!
Worst run club in the country, bar none!

complete lack of success
on the pitch,we are unable to
keep hold of our good players
or to attract anyone worth a light to the club.Unless we get proper investment(10 mill
kitty?Don't make us laugh!), unless we get a credible manager, and somehow we don't get relegated-Richards,Distin,Barton and anyone else worth selling will all be on their way in the close season.Sad,but true.

I agree if this board are still in charge they would sell Micah for cash in the summer like a shot.
But will Micah go yet? He has all the first team football he can handle at the moment. Plays for England. Why move to some rich club to warm the bench like SWP. He can do another year or 2 for city and England, then take his pick. I don't know whether he sees it that way. But with player power these days, one things for sure, it will be up to him and not the board.
If he does go, £30m + would seem nearer the mark, given what the rags paid for that handsome devil Rio.
