The Blues boss stood and listened impassively as the 7,000 massed in the Darwen End verbally ripped his faltering side to shreds as they bowed out of the FA Cup at the last eight stage for the second year running.
The fans' fury was the culmination of months of post-Christmas frustration at a team that singularly fails to entertain and has looked increasingly clueless in front of the goalposts.
Failing to create even one clear cut scoring opportunity against 10 men was the last straw for those who put their heart and soul - and hard-earned money - into following City.
There was clearly an increase in the effort compared to the home debacle against Wigan but it still wasn't enough to suggest that there is much light at the end of the tunnel and the supporters were quick to seize on old failings.
Blank
In their last six matches against Premiership opposition the Blues have drawn a blank five times, no wonder skipper Richard Dunne felt the need and urge to publicly criticise the new signings brought in to score the goals.
The failure to spend the £4m made available in the January transfer window on a striker has come back to sit on the manager's shoulder like a ravenous vulture.
Even if the Blues were to go on a winning run that made the doom mongers appear ridiculous and far too premature in venting their spleen, it is unlikely that all the dissenters would drift back into the pro-Pearce camp. The discontent now runs deep.
Pearce doesn't appear to have lost the confidence of the dressing room but it has clearly and possibly irreparably evaporated in the cheap and not so cheap seats.
Not that the fans can be considered blameless in their behaviour at Ewood Park.
Of course chanting on match days is the only way they can en masse make their feelings known to team, manager and board alike.
But they have to be careful they do not alienate the talented along with the talentless, the feted along with the feckless.
Cares
Poor Micah Richards looked hurt and shocked at the end of the cup-tie as he went towards the fans to thank them for their loyalty and wonderful backing.
He was greeted with a volley of `you're not fit to wear the shirt' and, despite holding his badge in an effort to show them he personally cares for the club, the chant did not subside.
Surely there was not one Blues fan packed into that stand who thinks that an 18-year-old youngster who has fought his way into the England national team from the City Academy and is currently one of the most coveted defenders in the country is not fit to wear the shirt.
Next time Richards is tapped up by a club in the upper echelons of the Premeirship or rung up by his agent asking if he fancies a move it is to be hoped he doesn't remember those moments at Ewood Park and think to himself "why should I play for fans who don't respect me?"
It is an insult to suggest to City followers that the best thing they can do now is to all get behind a side that is fighting for its very survival because matters have gone beyond the happy-clappy stage but they can be a little more careful about who gets caught in the crossfire.
Divisions seem to be popping up all over the place at the moment with the captain criticising and the fans fighting among themselves. How Charlton must be lapping up the goings on at Sportcity and remember they still have to make up what is effectively a seven point gap on the Blues. What City need most now is strong, firm leadership both in the boardroom and dressing room.
What do you think? Have your say.

If Mr Bailey takes time to read these pages, which I doubt he does, he would know that to be the case.
I for one would like him (Mr Bailey) to apologise to MR, JB, RD and SD the next time he sees them in the corridors at COMS and re-assure them that we were not directing our abuse at these individuals but at the manager, and his buys that have failed to produce anything that is worthy of the light blue shirt.

The club will not get out of trouble by continued back-biting and recrimmination. The personnel at the disposal of the manager will not change between now & the end of the season. Their individual abilities & skill levels are unlikely to dramatically improve. Whatever the ultimate outcome of the next few weeks, whoever is in charge at the end of the season, between now and then the players need to get their collective act together and play for each other, put their bodies on the line, grind out some results and nick a couple of wins where they can. Hatfuls of goals are not expected. Flowing football at this stage is not required, possible or likely.
The fans have a choice - to offer their support, to lift the team (however difficult that may be) and perhaps, just perhaps generate a performance from someone that makes a difference - a tackle made, that extra effort to cover an opposition run... or we can continue to get on the backs of the players and act as a twelfth man for the opposition. Fans are entitled to their views and it is difficult to resist the urge to vent them when hard earned money appears wasted and loyalty unrewarded. I doubt that anyone can honestly say that they genuinely work better when their boss/friends/team-mates are getting on at them. Individuals need to make that choice and decide how they can best help the effort on the pitch.

I don't like booing and giving people who give their all unwarranted stick, but Mr Bailey would do well to look at who he targets too.

I really don't know what SP is thinking about for tomorrows game - i suspect a 4 5 1 formation now; Isaksson (but will probably be Weaver); Richards, Dunne, Distin, Ball; Trabelsi, Ireland, Barton, Sun, Vassell; Corradi.
Prabably means we'll get 0, so best we can hope for is 0-0, but i think it will be 0-2.

I'm all for shouting my head off in a positive way (as I did for most of Sundays game) but I think if we shouted as loud as we possibly could between now and next Christmas we'll still struggle to create, and more importantly, score a goal.

comments regarding this
phenomenally self-serving
hypocritical piece of trash
offered up as serious
journalism by Chris Bailey,
but SoulboyFTR's missives
say it all. Nicely done,
Soulboy! Of course SP has
lost the dressing room, as
Jesper has noted. The squad
is now split between the
locals and the out-of-towners
and SP has now gone on
record essentially backing
Dunne, who is our best player
but now clearly not fit to
remain as skipper. Given
this split, the Board and
Cowardly Chairman have no
choice but to sack Pearce.
I feel sorry for Micah, but
he is, as Windy Miller points
out, a hothead who needs to
grow up in a hurry. As far
as I'm concerned, Dunne, the
now rearrested Barton and the
entire Foreign Legion at City
are all pretty pathetic role-
models for this young starlet. If we are
relegated, as seems likely,
Micah and rest will all be
sold off to satisfy the debt
to Wardle and Makin anyway.
Don't you all wonder what our
potential new owners think of
all this???

So you are right, his judgement and abilities have come under serious scrutiny and been found wanting. The best managers make changes that affect games. The failure to make a change as soon as Blackburn went down to 10 before giving them time to reorganise is another pointer. Reminded me of Sven in Euro 2004 bringing on Phil Neville against Portugal instaed of SWP. The latter would have given the opposition something to worry about, the former said "I think we can sit back & scrap 1-0". Scolari had the bottle to take off Figo (his captain!) & put on a player who ended up scotring the equaliser. The rest is history.
When the team is fractured the manager has to be the unifying force. I think he thinks he's trying.....I also think he's failing & that his touchline antics are now like the 'wallpaper'. You know its there, you see it every day but you can't remember the colour.
No one hears him anymore.

FACT: There is no discipline on or off the pitch. Players have started to break ranks so how can anyone expect the supporters not to? The leadership at managerial level is non-existent. Wardle was trying to hang on till the end of the season and has been found out. Hello! I'ts too late for that. Some of us have been screaming for change since last season and now it's inevitable. Come rain or shine SP is going and his team of misfits and mercenaries know it. My fear was that what happened on Sunday was going to happen at the COMS in the Derby. With luck we're going to spared that one now. Our board will at last act. They've been forced to and strange as it might sound it won't be solely because of the results, or the manager willing to walk away, or the TV pundits/ media pressure or the Board waking up and finally smelling the coffee! No, the true reason... FACT because for the first time in my life of following City since 1970 the fans have seriously frightened the board into accepting that we're pooh and we're sick of it. To coin a phrase from a famous movie "We're as mad as hell, and we're not gonna take it anymore" and they finally, finally realise it!
