STUART Pearce today sifted through the wreckage of another demoralising 90 minutes at Blackburn and declared that there were no splits in the Blues camp.
Joey Barton and Bernardo Corradi were pictured in a heated exchange at Ewood Park and pre-match comments from the England midfielder and skipper Richard Dunne appeared to point at a divide in the squad.
But Pearce, who is still under intense scrutiny having earned a stay of execution after the board were in informal discussions throughout yesterday, looked ahead to tomorrow's visit of champions Chelsea by insisting that all is well and that everyone is focused on gaining the nine or ten points he feels are necessary to reach safety.
"I don't think there are splits within the players. They are just frustrated that we cannot score goals. It is the one thing that is holding us back," he said.
"Defensively and spirit wise the camp is pretty good. We can only turn around the negativity by winning the next game.
Spotlight
"We are in the spotlight at the moment and because our results have not been good enough we have left ourselves wide open for critics outside the club and inside it to have a field day.
"That is the nature of the game. We need to galvanise some results and quickly. We probably need nine or ten points to be safe.
"We know things are tough but if the players are pointing fingers at each other then we are not going to go anywhere. They have to let me take the flak and concentrate on winning against Chelsea."
Pearce knows that if no points are gathered from the visit of the champions and they then follow up with a defeat at Middlesbrough on Saturday, then he could well be out of Premiership management by this time next week.
The board have had meetings, both formal and informal, since the deflating defeat by Wigan at the start of the month and are deeply worried by continuing unrest among supporters, particularly as the current run is putting a question mark against new investment from America.
If City do decide enough is enough and say goodbye to Pearce, who under the terms of his contract will not receive compensation, then the list of possible replacements include Graeme Souness, Glenn Hoddle, Ruud Gullit, and Bryan Robson.
If Pearce goes, who would you want to see in charge? Have your say.

thereby making it easy to work out who DOESN'T show up.
The fact that two senior players felt the need to break rank and talk to the press before an FA Cup QF speaks volumes. As the majority of fans have known for some time, the players who aren't pulling their weight are by and large all Mr. Pearce's foreign buys.Obviously,SP knows as well as we do that the team has developed cliques, but has to say otherwise or take the blame.I thought things were pretty bad, but they're actually worse than that. How on earth do you fight relegation with a divided team and a leader who loses credibility with every game?
IF we survive this season there has to be a root and branch overhaul starting with the clown Pearce and his "coaching" staff.

To me what will be interesting as a last throw of the dice by SP will be his team selection tomorrow - does he stick with the players who have put him in this predicament therefore putting the final nail in his coffin, or does he swallow his pride and make some big changes?
I'm not convinced that Sturridge should start against Chelsea, but he should, if and when brought on, get more than 3 minutes.
For me the team for tomorrow should be - Isaksson; Ball, Distin, Dunne, Richards; Miller (or Abdoun), Ireland, Barton, Vassell; Sturridge (or Dickov), Mpenza; Subs - Weaver, Dickov (or Sturridge), Johnson, Sun, Abdoun (or Miller). CTID

We played 3-5-2 and won one game, so Pearce has tried to stick to it ever since. And in the end it has turned into a 5-3-2. There is no playmaker which this formation needs, and it only works if you play a passing game. Yet we play long ball, skip out the midfield. Then the midfield is too far behind play. This is basic stuff.
To say that we have a problem scoring goals is avoiding the issue: on Sunday we didn't have a single shot on goal. We don't create shots never mind score them. I was crying out for Hamann or Barton to have a long range shot. Anything would do. Someone have a go. From junior level upwards coaches tell their players to test the goalie in the first five minutes of a match. We never do this. If the strikers have problems scoring you would think the manager would be encouraging midfielders to have a go... but again we have Pearce as boss. As Bobby Charlton used to say, if you don't shoot you don't score.

You have never seen a team managed by this bloke who will not give 110% for the cause..Not like the johnny foreigners in todays team...Who don't give two hoots for the club, only their over inflated ego's and wage packets.
