HIGHLY rated Luke Gutteridge destroyed John Askey's unbeaten home run as Macclesfield manager.
On 48 minutes he stole the ball off Chris Priest before intelligently linking with John Turner. The striker laid the ball back into his path for the £500,000 rated midfield man to role the ball past Steve Wilson from 15 yards.
Macclesfield dominated the first half but created few chances, Danny Whitaker with their best attempt, a fierce low drive that was athletically tipped wide by Sean Wilson on 38 minutes.
After the Gutteridge goal, John Miles sent a shot inches over the bar and Michael Carr ended a 60 yard run with a low drive that was again well kept out by Marshall.
However, it was Cambridge who had the better chances to extend their lead as Macclesfield left to a succession of slow hand claps.

The last thing MTFC needs right now is the kind of sensationalist headline printed in today's Football Pink - particularly when it's totally inaccurate. Simon Carter - the "boos" and "slow hand claps" were clearly aimed at Cambridge's time wasting tactics, not at the Silkmen. And what's all this about a "horror show"? The first half was fine; the 2nd half may have been poor; it certainly wasn't a "horror show". Opinionated headlines - having a go at the team and its supporters - may have been justified a few months ago. However, they're misplaced at the present time. Virtually everyone with MTFC's interests at heart, would agree that the team is moving in the right direction under John Askey's leadership and the last thing we need right now is the resurrection of a spat between club and supporters, fuelled by inaccurate and misguided reporting in the local press. We can excuse Paul Hince's biased views against the Silkmen, it's less excusable from someone like yourself who has been reporting on the club for a number of years and has a better understanding of what actually goes on at Moss Rose.
