Rushden and Diamonds 3 Macclesfield Town 0

MACCLESFIELD went down to a heavy defeat at Rushden, but still had reason to celebrate as results elsewhere left them safe from the drop.

The Silkmen's total of 51 points is enough to secure another season in Division Three, but there is still plenty to be done if they are to avoid another nerve jangling campaign next time.

After matching the Diamonds for much of the first half, Macc fell behind shortly before the break when Dean Holdswoth poked home from close range.

Twenety minutes into the second half, Rushden their lead through youngster David Bell.

And soon afterwards Holdsworth grabbed his second of the game to make the points safe.

Macc had a chance to restore some late pride, but their afternoon was summed up when Darren Tinson failed to score from the penalty spot.
