A lack of discipline cost Macclesfield dear on an appalling away-day at Cambridge.

After being nutmegged in the 27th minute Michael Welch brought down Omer Riza allowing Paul Wanless to score at his second attempt from the penalty spot.

Macclesfield got back into the game moments before the break when striker Matthew Tipton pounced on a mistake by keeper Shaun Marshall before scoring from a narrow angle.

But Danny Whitaker lost his concentration in the 66th minute when he flicked a kick at Luke Guttridge who fell down as if he'd been pole-axed by a swordsman.

And from the resultant free kick Riza picked out David Kitson who nodded home his 13th goal of the season.

The game was sealed in the 73rd minute when Karl Munroe was harshly judged to have brought down Kitson, allowing Riza to score from the spot.
