Macclesfield Town put clear blue water between themselves and Boston with what manager David Moss described as a solid, workmanlike performance.

They took the lead as early as the sixth minute when Kyle Lightbourne nodded down a Steve Hitchen cross into the path of Danny Whitaker, who slotted home his sixth goal of the season from close range.

Macclesfield might have added another on the stroke of half time when a Lightbourne free kick was brilliantly tipped wide by Paul Bastock.

The Pilgrim's best chances came immediately after the break, Steve Wilson making a sharp reaction save to block a Neil Redfern shot which had crashed through the defensive wall.

Steve Hitchen was also on hand on 72 minutes to head a Mark Greaves header off the line.

Macclesfield sealed the game just one minute later when Matthew Tipton headed on a Darren Tinson cross for Stockport's on loan winger Andy Welsh to head home on the bounce.

In the closing stages both Welsh and Lightbourne forced superb saves from the visitors' man of the match keeper Bastock.
