Macclesfield Town

Macc's safety route

MACCLESFIELD TOWN take on basement club Torquay today knowing a victory will virtually guarantee League Two survival.

The Silkmen are five points above the drop zone but with just seven points separating 10 teams at the bottom, the Cheshire club can't afford anything less than a win at Moss Rose.

Brian Horton's side grabbed a late equaliser at Notts County to earn a valuable point in a 1-1 draw in Saturday's relegation battle.

Paul Harsley kept his cool from the penalty spot to hit an 89th-minute equaliser after substitute Kevin Townson had been tripped in the area. The midfielder's late strike saved Tommy Lee's blushes after the keeper's error had led to County's opener in first half injury time.

The on-loan Manchester United keeper dropped Chris Palmer's corner and defender Michael Edwards pounced to hand the home side an undeserved lead.

"Tommy thought he was pushed but I couldn't see it from where I was," said Horton. "But a point was the least we deserved. There was only one side in it and if we had lost it would have been very unjust.

"I was pleased with the performance although it typifies our away form; we played very well we just didn't get the result. However, in the end, it was a very valuable point."

The Macclesfield boss added: "That's five points from three games and it's now a very big game against Torquay. We've got to win it but our home form is as good as any side in the divisions."
