Silkmen left in limbo

MACCLESFIELD are still waiting to hear from the Football Foundation - 11 days after being told their decision was in the post.

The Silkmen are waiting to discover whether their repayment proposals will be accepted. Macc were ordered to pay more than '250,000, including '195,000 compensation to the Football Foundation, which was initially due by the end of January.

The Cheshire club approached the Football Foundation and Football Association about paying the fine over an extended period of time, thought to be two years, and expected to find out their fate last Wednesday.

Town claim they received an email on Friday, February 10 informing the club the decision was 'in the post'. The League Two outfit contacted the Football Foundation again last week to tell them they had not received anything and, it is claimed, were told again it was on its way. But, incredibly, Macclesfield have still not received any confirmation.

"We still haven't heard anything," said Macclesfield chairman Rob Bickerton. "We're in the same position as last week."

The Football Foundation were unavailable for comment.

Meanwhile, Brian Horton believes the Silkmen need 11 more points to guarantee safety after they were forced to settle for a point against Lincoln - their fourth successive 1-1 draw in the league.

He said: "We've probably got to get to above 50 points, so that's 11 more in 14 games, and if you can't do that then you really don't deserve to stay up."

Town will take a massive step towards ensuring they do not become embroiled in a relegation dogfight if they can defeat bottom club Rushden and Diamonds on Saturday.

Horton saw his side draw their 15th game of the league campaign last weekend, something he feels has seriously hampered Macc's promotion ambitions this term.

"We don't like drawing games," he added. "We go into them trying to win, like we did against Lincoln. It's 15 draws but we can't do anything about that now. If we had converted five of those that would have had another 10 points and we would be in the play-offs.

"The [starting] 11 is pretty much picking itself at the moment; they're playing okay, look solid, and it's just a shame that we conceded that one goal [against Lincoln]."

Horton hopes to have Alan Fettis available for Macc's trip to Nene Park after the veteran goalkeeper missed the last three games with a thigh injury.
