Macclesfield jetted off to their Tenerife training camp this week after the club’s fifth straight league defeat.
But, far from a winter jolly, the manager says the benefits will make the excursion more than pay for itself.
“The lads have been under a lot of pressure and they’ve played a lot of football because of our injuries,” said Simpson from their Deportive Marino base.
“We’ve got a bit done and some of the injured lads are getting some gym work under their belts.
“It’s a trip that was booked a while ago as a reward for the efforts they’ve put in and what they’ve done for the club in the last few months, but it’s not a ‘jolly’, they’re here to train and, to be fair to them, they’ve worked hard.
“Cheltenham came here for a week recently and they said how much it recharged their batteries, it did them a power of good.”
Macc head for bottom side Northampton this weekend with up to nine players missing. Simpson had tried to bring Hamza Bencherif back to Macc on a short-term loan but was rebuffed by Notts County boss Martin Allen.
