Burton v Macclesfield: Preview

There could be a clamour for seats on the team bus as Macclesfield make the trip to Burton tomorrow, writes Mike Glendinning.

After Macc’s recent injury problems, manager Gary Simpson now has a host of players vying for a place in the side to face Burton, who go into the game on the verge of the play-off spots.

With his ankle woes seemingly behind him, Waide Fairhurst is hoping to return to the side after lasting less than half of the Silkmen’s season-opener against Dagenham. Paul Morgan has yet to kick a ball for Macc this season but watched their last outing, a home defeat to leaders Southend, from the bench.

With loan striker George Donnelly recovered from a cracked rib and available again, and Ross Draper in the running having served a one-game ban, Simpson can afford himself the luxury of resting one or two at the Pirelli Stadium.

He is, however, expecting a battle in Burton, saying: “They’re a good team, I saw them against Cheltenham a few weeks ago and they beat Barnet 6-3 last weekend.

“Their manager (Paul Peschisolido) has spent, and spent wisely. They’ve got two quick wingers, two energetic midfield lads, two up front that are a handful and they’re quite solid at the back.”
