Macclesfield Town

Walk in the Park

RECORD-BREAKER Jon Parkin may have surprised a few people with his prolific form - but not himself.

The striker's last-gasp winner on Saturday - his 21st of the campaign - came in the same week he broke Matty Tipton's club record of 19 goals in a season.

But Parkin, 23, was so confident he would break his strike partner's haul he tried to have a bet on himself to finish League Two's top scorer.

'I was sat in the hotel before our first game of the season against Leyton Orient,' explained the league's top hitman. 'I asked Paul Harsley to ring the bookies to see if I could get a bet on me being top scorer in the league but they didn't have any prices.'

While Parkin, who has hit the net 17 times in the league, is upset he missed out on a potential windfall, the former York forward is more than happy with Macclesfield's form after they recorded their third win in four games.

He added: 'In the first half we let ourselves down a little bit but in the second half we came out and performed. It's the sign of a good team if you can come from behind and go on to win the game. It showed the character of the lads and that can only be good for Macclesfield.'

But the 6ft 4ins marksman is not getting carried away. 'Obviously there's been talk of promotion in the dressing but we need to keep our feet on the ground,' said Parkin.

'But it's in our own hands and if we carry on getting results and playing like we did second half then who knows.'

Parkin is also quick to acknowledge the role his fellow forward has played in his success. Tipton handed him the ball to complete his hat-trick from the penalty spot at Notts County and unselfishly set up the winner on Saturday.

'Tippy's been excellent and he did brilliantly for my goal,' he added. 'You work as a partnership and with his pace he can get in behind and get onto my flick-ons.'
