Macclesfield Town

'Playing for my future'

STEVE Wilson has admitted he is playing for his future at Macclesfield Town as he looks to continue his excellent recent form in the New Year's derby against Chester City.

The 30-year-old keeper has enjoyed a nine-match run in the side since ousting Northern Ireland international Alan Fettis in November, but knows that with his contract up at the end of the season, he is under pressure to perform.

He told Express Sport: "I'd love to stay here, but I have been in football long enough to know that things can change pretty quickly.

"All I can do is keep going, and keep doing my best, which I think I have since I've been here at the club."

Praised

Wilson was praised for his attitude by his boss Brian Horton after a virtuoso display at Grimsby on Boxing Day, but the Hull-born stopper was typically modest about his display.

"We defended well as a team, and I did my little bit, but to be honest I'd rather the ball was up the other end and me have nothing to do at all. It's always a positive when your manager says things like that, but you've just got to get on with it.

"The Christmas period is always tough, but the lads are well prepared for it. We're in good shape."

At the start of the season, many wondered what role the former supporters' player of the year would play in the squad after the arrival of Alan Fettis.

Keen

But an injury to the big Irishman gave Wilson an opportunity - and it's one he is keen to take.

He said: "When Alan came in at the start of the season he was excellent, but when he got injured I had to take my chance. Things have been going OK so far, and it's better to be playing regularly at the top of the league rather than at the bottom.

"Hopefully we can continue after Christmas and keep it going until the end of the season."

  • The club shop will be opening until 7.30pm on Wednesday and Thursday night for supporters to purchase tickets for Saturday's derby. It will also be open from 9.30am to 4pm on New Year's Eve. The game has been made all ticket on police advice, but season ticket holders need not apply for another ticket. No tickets will be on sale on New Year's Day.
