Bug causes problems at Macc

A STOMACH bug has ruled two senior Silkmen players out of training this week - causing concern in the Macc camp ahead of Saturday's trip to Yeovil.

Centre-half Michael Welch and goalkeeper Steve Wilson have been struck down by the illness, and Macc town boss Brian Horton admitted he is crossing his fingers that the rest of the squad do not suffer.

"Michael came into training last week and looked awful, so we sent him home - but it looks as if he's come down with the same thing again this week," he told us.

"Willo (Wilson) has had to go home with the same illness, so were obviously hoping that will clear up in time for the weekend."

Another injury worry for Macc is skipper Tommy Widdrington, who pulled out of last Sunday's squad with a lower back injury.

The midfielder has been working with club physio Paul Lake all week, and will return to full training on Thursday.

"We trained very hard early last week and Tommy came into training on Friday and said he could feel his back.

"We missed Tommy's talking on Sunday. He's an old head in the midfield and we needed someone to get people organised and into position.

"His back has been better this week, and providing everything is OK he should be training with me towards the end of the week."

Widdrington missed much of the New Year programme after picking up a similar injury in the Boxing Day defeat against Cheltenham Town.

  • DON'T forget next Tuesday night the Silkmen take on Cambridge United at Moss Rose (kick-off 7.45pm) in what has become a hot-blooded fixture over the last few seasons.

The clubs fought out a memorable penalty shootout in the second round of the FA Cup and fought out two bad-tempered games in the league - with both ties going the way of the Us.

Cambridge - under French manager Claude le Roy - have ultimately struggled so far this season, but have remained undefeated in their last three games, winning two.
