Horton eyeing new names

MACCLESFIELD Town manager Brian Horton told Express Sport he wants to bring in up to three more players to improve the Silkmen's consistency.

Horton was left fuming last Saturday when his side went from 1-0 up against Bury to lose the game 2-1 thanks to two defensive errors.

And now he is ready to draft in some new faces, possibly before his side face struggling Notts County at Moss Rose on Sunday afternoon.

He told us: "I think we need two or three more players to freshen things up. I have made a number of enquiries this week, but as yet we haven't brought anyone in.

"I wasn't happy with our forward play, our midfield - who were brilliant against Chesterfield - barely got a pass together on Saturday.

"The whole thing was flat against Bury apart from two or three players, it was very disappointing.

"If I can't get anyone in by Saturday, I'll still be looking."

One man who will be available for selection against Notts County is former Magpies defender Tony Barras, who limped off the field against Bury with a shin injury.

"It's a bit sore," admitted Barras, "But with the extra day off there's a good chance I'll play."

The experienced centre half made over 40 appearances for County last season before being released in the summer - something Barras said has helped to further his career.

"They didn't offer me a contract, but when Macc came in I thought - Brian's a better manager, they are a good set of lads at Macc, and the club wants to go places, so I signed straight away.

"It has turned out to be a good decision because Notts County have been down near the bottom, and except for the Bury game, we have been doing pretty well.

"Everyone was disappointed with the result at Bury. The manager made his feelings known and we want a chance to put it right."

Barras has also set his sights on earning another contract at Moss Rose when his existing deal runs out at the end of the season.

"There's absolutely no reason why I would want to leave here, I'm loving it.

"The club seems to be getting more and more professional with each passing week and it's a pleasure to play here."

The Silkmen have struggled to overcome sides languishing in the bottom reaches of the league so far this season, with trips to Chester City, Southend United and Kidderminster Harriers all ending in defeat.

But Brian Horton is banking on the club's outstanding home form to see them through on Sunday, shirking suggestions that the Silkmen find it hard being tagged as favourites.

He said: "I don't go along with that at all. There are no 'Arsenals' in this league. What the players have got to start to do is grind out results.

"We turned out at Bury thinking we were the better football club."
