KEITH Alexander has warned in-form Macclesfield to expect a backlash from Wycombe tonight.

The League Two leaders crashed out of the FA Cup to non-league Eastwood on Saturday, and Alexander is bracing himself for a stern response.

"It couldn't have been a worse result for us," said the Macc boss. "We will have to be ready for a backlash with Peter Taylor's team desperate to prove themselves in front of their home crowd.

"They haven't become a bad team overnight and they are not leading League Two for no reason.

"It was always going to be a difficult challenge, but their pride will have been hurt."

Macclesfield's fortunes in the Cup could not have been more in contrast to Wycombe's.

The Silkmen were rewarded with a third round home clash against Everton following victory over Port Vale.

And it is with confidence that they will travel to Wycombe's Adams Park, with Alexander vowing to go for the win.

Hunt

"Our confidence is growing game by game and I will continue my policy of picking horses for courses," he said. "We want to go there and get all three points.

"My aim is that we should be back in the play-off hunt by the New Year and there could be no better place to start."

Macc look likely to seek an extension of Nathan Brown's loan deal from Wrexham, with the midfielder due to return after Saturday's game at Bury.

His three goals in five games have helped Alexander's side climb the table and it would be a surprise if the Macc manager opted to let him leave without a fight.

Alexander tonight looks set to stick with the strike force of Francis Green and Martin Gritton in favour of Simon Yeo and Gareth Evans.

Meanwhile, Peter Taylor wants a reaction from Wycombe following their Cup exit, saying: "I thought they won far more tackles and far more headers."
