MACCLESFIELD manager Keith Alexander has dismissed suggestions that his side hold the upper hand for their FA Cup tie at Port Vale tonight after their 4-1 league win at Vale Park in September.

"It wasn't a representative score line, in fact it flattered us," he said.

"And there has been a major change in personnel at Port Vale since then."

Immediately after the defeat by the Silkmen changes were made at Port Vale. Out went Lee Sinnott to be replaced by Dean Glover with former Macc boss Ian Brightwell moving in asĀ  coach. The changing of the guard has seen their form improve, though they stand only one place above Macc in League Two, and that only by virtue of goal difference.

Alexander has vowed to continue with his policy of 'horses for courses' and could be tempted to adopt a less attacking formation than the side that beat Grimsby 1- 0 at Moss Rose on Tuesday night.

Either Izak Reid or Danny Thomas could face demotion to the bench as he looks to hold midfield with an extra central man, forsaking width even on the spacious expanses of Vale Park.

Both Gareth Evans and experienced striker Simon Yeo will also be keen to get back in the starting XI, with Francis Green and Martin Gritton failing to score on Tuesday.

Though an FA Cup run would be a treasured prize for Macc, Alexander has not given up hope of a push for the play-offs.

"We are looking to be challenging and the picture will only become clearer after Christmas," he said.
