"We have had applications from retiring footballers who have played at the highest level, of managers who have managed at the highest level, managers who have recently been employed in League Two and from lower league managers who aspire to work at a higher level," said Mr Bickerton.
He added that interviews had begun and that further interviews will continue through the next few days with more applications expected in the coming week.
"We are in no rush to make an appointment," he said. "We have been through this procedure before and when we appointed Paul Ince it was a considered move.
"The players come back on Friday and if there is no one in position by then we have some experienced professionals at the club in Rob Bightwell, John Askey and Paul Lake to take things forward."
It is believed that former League Two managers Mark Wright and Keith Curle, who lives in neighbouring Prestbury, have already put their case.
Other names to be touted include Burton Albion boss Nigel Clough, who has been with the Midlands club for nine years as a player, player-manager and manager, and may want a new challenge.
Micky Adams, who was beaten to the MK Dons post by Ince, may be interested as might former Newcastle midfield general Rob Lee.

Burton have a terrific new ground, are financially secure and are more than likely to threaten for promotion again this coming season. Macclesfield will I'm sure again be battling to remain in the League and to be solvent.
Sorry but his name yet again is a complete non starter, as he is looking forward to commencing pre-season training next Monday with the Brewers
