The Macclesfield Town boss has been linked with a number of high-profile jobs following his rescue act at the Moss Rose last season.
Reports in Milton Keynes suggest Ince has overtaken previous front runner Micky Adams as favourite to fill the vacancy left by Martin Allen's departure to ambitious Leicester City.
Ironically, Ince had previously been linked with the job at Leicester.
Meanwhile, Macc are hoping to continue the rebuilding of their forward line following the departures of John Murphy and Matty McNeil.
Macc have already brought in striker Francis Green and winger Danny Thomas, but assistant boss Ray Mathias said there are a few more players on their wanted list.
"It's a shame to see Matty and John leave, as they were a handful and did a magnificent job for us last season, but we've got to try to replace them now," said Mathias.
"We have earmarked a few players and we're hoping to sit down and discuss things with them in the near future."
