Stuart Pearce to take temporary charge of England

Stuart Pearce

Stuart Pearce will take charge of the England team for the friendly against Holland on February 29, Football Association chairman David Bernstein has confirmed.

Fabio Capello resigned as England manager on Wednesday following the decision by the FA to strip John Terry of the captaincy because of his pending racism trial in July. Terry denies a charge of racially abusing QPR defender Anton Ferdinand in October.

Harry Redknapp has become the overwhelming favourite to succeed Capello in the long term.

But former Manchester City boss Pearce, who served as Capello's assistant, is the England Under-21 boss and will take charge of the Great Britain men's Olympic team this summer, will look after senior national team affairs in the short term at least. He had been due to be in charge of the under-21s against Belgium in Middlesbrough on February 29.

Bernstein told a press conference at Wembley: "I can announce that Stuart Pearce will manage the England team against Holland.

"He has huge experience outside and inside the organisation. He has been working with the under-21 team and has been working with Fabio for some time. I have got great confidence in Stuart, we will be in good hands.

"Our priority then will be to appoint a new England manager."

Bernstein revealed that the decision to strip Terry of the captaincy had been a unanimous one.

"We all believed that the John Terry case would be dealt with in March or April," Bernstein said.

"When it was postponed we were taken by surprise like everybody else was taken by surprise.

"The board made a very quick and unanimous decision regarding the captaincy. I informed Fabio on Thursday evening as soon as the decision had been made. Fabio wasn't happy but he accepted the board's authority in the matter.

"On Sunday Fabio conducted an interview with an Italian broadcaster. That caused conjecture and huge public debate and frankly it was an unsatisfactory situation."

There's no doubting Stuart pearce's heart and desire. I loved him as a player. Left footed, like me and I even started my lifelong obsession with "Puma Kings" because of him. But I have to say, after his honeymoon period, his time at city produced the most dour, miserable football I've seen in 35 years of city-watching.

No surprise. Great player. But I have to say out of a procession of poor and average City managers in the last 35 years, he was probably the worst. The football was dire.

For me there is only 1 man for the job long term. Simon Cowell. He's a master at managing a squad with small talent and large egos on the big stage.

At least Stuart's not costing us a fortune to take us nowhere.

More permanently, and If he gets it, Harry knows how to motivate players and get them working for each other.

If anyone can bring pride back into playing for England, he can.

Poor poor decision , i can see him getting the job on a full time basis if they cant get the man they really want. Not even of glimmer of success anywhere on his CV only managed a little club with no success there.Under 21's flatter to deceive under his stewardship so players in senior squad won't take to what he tells them to do. The FA should do everything they can to get their man in place before the friendly even if it means having Redknapp on part time basis till the end of Tottenham's season then let him take over full time then.

It's irrelevant who gets the job. The poor unfortunate will be built up by the media only to be brought crashing down at the first sign of a poor performance. Nothing is going to change until it's recognised that the gutter newspapers like the Sun and Mirror, who thrive on extremes of sensationalism, drive England teams to the point where they are scared to play in big games. All I want is an England team that goes out and plays to their potential, free in the knowledge that they're not going to be lambasted if they lose. The other thing I want to see is a manager brave enough to play the best England TEAM which is very different from picking a side that includes out best players. We have to leave behind for good the likes of Rooney (skilled but not mature enough to stay calm when under pressure), Terry (too much history of behaviour with potential to disrupt the dressing room). Just look at the 1-0 frendly against Spain to see what can be achieved.
