Gareth Barry: I learned lesson from tough World Cup

LEARNING CURVE: Gareth Barry
Manchester City midfielder Gareth Barry hopes he has become a better player after last summer's tough World Cup.

Barry came in for criticism for his performances in South Africa last summer but has tried to respond in a positive manner.

Ahead of the Euro 2012 qualifier with Wales he said: "You take criticism as a learning curve. Every player is going to get it throughout a career.

"At a World Cup, it is going to be more high profile because of the stage you are on.

"I've come back this season, trying to learn from what happened in the summer.

"Sometimes that can make you a better player.

"That's in the past now. I've learned from it and I'm looking forward to the future."

Barry is adamant the captaincy issue has been put to rest with the reappointment of John Terry in place of injury-prone Rio Ferdinand.

Capello admits the way the armband was passed from one player to another in Copenhagen last month after stand-in skipper Lampard was substituted helped make up his mind to reinstate Terry.

Barry said: "It was the manager's initial decision to take it away from John.

"In the players' minds, they probably didn't feel it was down to them to give it back to John (on the pitch in Denmark).

"So the only way it should have been done was for the manager to reinstate John and that's what's happened and now we are ready to move on."

Barry added: "The players were asked if they were comfortable with it and everybody has been. No one has spoken to the manager to say they weren't happy.

"We feel for Rio, how unlucky he has been since being given the captain's armband with the injuries he has picked up.

"The general sense of the players is we are really comfortable and we know that John Terry is a great leader.

"He did a good job before and I'm sure he can continue that.

"Now the decision has been made, the lads are really comfortable with it and respect the decision."

What do you think? Have your say.

He can hope all he likes, because he hasn't.

But that's not his fault, he doesn't play in the same way as he did at Villa where he looked a very good player, same can be said for Milner too, they've both been ruined since they came here. They're both expected to spend too much time worrying about the opposition in a crowded midfied, rather than playing to their strengths and getting forward and causing the opposition problems. .

You have to be kidding. how has he become a better player. Hes so slow its pathetic but I dont think its all his fault. He was much less exposed at Villa where less is expected. We are just paying too much for average players

So has he learnt to run faster and pass the ball forward?

He would be dangerous if he could kick with his right foot instead of just standing on it while he kicks with his left. Why do some players never learn to kick with both feet? They would be far better all round players if they weren't so restricted.

While Barry's in this learning phase could he please learn how to head a ball in defence, cover his left back and a notch or two up the pace ladder would be ever so appreciated.

The jury is still out I do believe!

What is this all about? England were awful in the South African World Cup as were the English squad. No passion, no drive, poor management & no tactics. Unfortunately Barry is included in that debacle. Has he improved - No; is he a top world class footballer - no. Has he let City down Yes; never ever replicated the form shown at Villa; now in balance could be the way City play him, but good players shine thru. Barry & Milner were always average players, they try hard but are very limited especially when confronted with class teams - at best a squad player when we have injuries.
Sorry but the truth:)

Just what has the Terry captaincy issue got to do with a story about Gareth Barry? Some people on here need to read what he's actually said, he hasn't said he's become a better player. To paraphrase, he's saying that the experience of the World Cup can help him learn to become a better player. He may not be a spectacular player but his worth to the team is there for all to see if you bother to look. Let me put it this way, if Yaya was missing you wouldn't notice, if Gareth is missing you do. Gareth plays a very effective but understated type of game, he never stops working for the team. He's a great asset.

Hes been disappointing ever since we bought him slow, no imagination, hard to believe hes a regular international, shows how poor the Engand team is. I am surprised as Ive said here before that he is a regular with City too over rated, another terrible Mark Hughes buy.

micah richards injured, again! our very own sick note!

Simply cannot run and a liability in the PL against the top teams

The sight of Muller burning him on the touchline in the Germany game should have been obvious

Would thrive in Serie A

gives the ball away to much, never goes forward

we got de jong already why is barry in the team

oh mr negative wants 2-3 holding midfielders to make sure we never win games

great thinking mr mancini but we do have to win some too

Tough world????????????

Hope the City squad were forced to watch the Bert Trautmann documentary last night and forced to read his book (assuming they can read).

If our present footballers had half the balls of Bert, City would be flying now.

Learnt what ?

He's having a poor season for the blues. Lack of pace is becoming a real concern and he is one of the most one footed players I have ever seen. His passing and pressing are both poor, he is responsible for giving the ball away on far too many occasions. Not good enough if we are to become a regular top four team.

He's too slow and not strong enough

I know Milner has done nothing for us since he joined but is now not the time to stop messing around and have players playing in their right positions??

Bring Yaya along side De Jong

Johnson (left) Milner (right) Silva (AMC) and Tevez in a 4 pronged attack

HART

RICHARDS/ZAB KOMPANY LESCOTT KOLOROV

YAYA NDJ

MILNER SILVA JOHNSON

TEVEZ

If it comes down to the Spurs game then we have blown it and will have another year in the Europa league with 15,000 at home watch god knows who FC vs City. We need to stop being football's biggest joke and start showing that we're one of the big boys in football and that we're here to stay!!!

We all did mate. That was the last time I'll fall for the "Golden generation" hype.
England haven't won anything longer than City haven't won anything.

BARRY'S PROBLEM IS HE IS TOO SLOW, WAS SHOWN UP SIGNIFICANTLY IN BLOEMFONTEIN IN FRONT OF MY EYES!!!

Ive been saying it for years and now the rest of you blues are waking up to it. Gareth Barry is and has been the most overated player in the EPL for years. He's slow, clumsy, awkward, tactically naiive and lacks invention and I haven't started on the bad points......Can not play him, Yaya and Nige in the same team leaves a gaping casm in the M/F. Why not try Milner in that hole or use Sweep and AJ on the flanks, would surely be much more productive. Gazza Bazza you are weakest link tat ta.

learning lessons is one thing. Putting them into practice is another. If he had any decency he'd pack his bags and go....................maybe he is and he's slower at doing that than he is at running.
