Beckham to bring United lesson to World Cup bid

David Beckham at the press conference

David Beckham is drawing on his experience at Manchester United as England 2018 fight until the last minute to host the World Cup.

Beckham, an England bid vice-president, has been lobbying the 22 FIFA members along with Prince William and Prime Minister David Cameron in Zurich ahead of Thursday's vote.

The England midfielder told a news conference: "The last 24 hours can be the most important without a doubt.

"All the way through my career, especially for Manchester United, I've known how important it is to keep fighting to the last minute - especially in the biggest games I have played in.

"I know how important it is to keep going right up to the decision."

Beckham also played a leading role in the final lobbying when London won the 2012 Olympics in Singapore five years ago, and he says securing the World Cup would mean as much if not more.

"Getting the Olympics to the East End was a huge thing but to bring the World Cup to your own country as an England player would be very, very special," he said.

He also believes the effect of the BBC Panorama allegations against FIFA members has been overcome.

Beckham added: "I think the momentum is out there now, people have focused on the negative side of what has been said and we now are focused on the positive side.

"I think we can trust every one of the members. At the end of the day they are football people.

"They are going to want a World Cup in the best country that they think could host the biggest sporting event in the world. Without a doubt we can trust them."

Who will win? Have your say.

Quite simple really, England deserve the World Cup. We invented the game and now it's our turn again. Maybe the BBC were right in highlighting certain areas because it could in the long run lead to a fair vote which should be ours.

As an Irish person I have some impartial points of view regarding England’s chances…

Positives:
• England have all of the stadia in place & are of a very high standard.
• England is the birthplace of Football
• The infrastructure in England is Excellent
• Passionate football fans.
• Stadia will be full unlike in other championships where we see half empty stadiums until the quarters.
• Low crime rates, cheap & accessible compared to Russia.
• Lessons will be learnt after the Olympics & this will add to England hosting one of the best World Cups of all time.

Negatives:
• Contradicting the above FIFA prefer for all of the stadia not to be in place for ‘legacy’ nonsense.
• When possible FIFA prefer for a World Cup to increase the popularity of football to increase in the host country – legacy nonsense again. Could the popularity of football possibly increase in England? I think not as it is already an integral part of English culture.
• Over the last 40 years a sizable minority of English fans have reaped havoc when travelling abroad to follow England – this cannot be over looked.
• The British Government & the FA have too high of standards to compete on a level playing field with less scrupulous bidding nations.

Every true football fan will be hoping that England get the World Cup as they deserve it.

Rationally it should be a no-brainer unfortunately FIFA are not rational and are corrupt.

Good luck with the bid from Ireland.
