Jermain Defoe's hat-trick and a goal from Manchester City star Adam Johnson ensured a winning start to England's Euro 2012 qualifying campaign.
Defoe put off a groin operation that threatened to rule him out of the game and gained perfect reward in a deserved win that eased some of the pressure that has been building around boss Fabio Capello.
United ace Wayne Rooney played an important role in the goals, which took Defoe's tally to 15 in 44 games. More importantly it moves England straight to the top of Group G.
Capello told ITV: "We were really focused on the game, I'm really happy.
"Rooney and Defoe are fantastic players, four assists from Rooney and three goals from Defoe. They were really good in every moment during the game.
"I'm really happy with the performance of the two forwards - but also the other players."
Another three points in Switzerland on Tuesday and the England boss can start to go about his work in some security again.
He will travel to Basle without Michael Dawson though after the Tottenham man suffered an awful-looking knee injury.
However, after his World Cup trauma, Capello has started to make good decisions again.
Aside from Defoe's obvious matchwinning contribution, Theo Walcott and City's Joe Hart were outstanding and fellow Blue James Milner looked far more comfortable on the left flank than he did in South Africa.
England could not have made a better start.
Rooney's pass released Ashley Cole whose initial shot was parried by Nikolay Mihaylov.
The Chelsea man was on to the rebound in a flash and when he turned it back for Defoe, the player who by rights should now be recovering from groin surgery provided an excellent first-time finish after just three minutes.
Hart save
The only time England found themselves in trouble was their own fault, when Glen Johnson's attempt to turn Ivelin Popov's cross away for a corner instead threatened a horrendous own goal until Hart plunged across to his right to make a vital save.
Rooney is still struggling to find his touch and at times looked well off the pace. But a sublime chip five minutes into the second half was a reminder of the talent he possesses and Mihaylov needed to make a fingertip save to deny the Manchester United man.
Three direct assists are not to be sniffed at either, even if his international goal drought now extends to 11 games.
Dawson's horrible injury followed. Slow motion replays showed the defender's left knee buckling under him.
As he was carried off in obvious pain, it was hard to avoid the conclusion that he will not be back on a football pitch again for some considerable time.
There followed a pivotal 15 seconds, which started with an excellent Hart reaction save to repel Martin Petrov.
England countered immediately and a flowing move involving Gareth Barry, Steven Gerrard and Rooney ended with Defoe firing through Mihaylov's legs.
Johnson's strike eased England further clear and paved the way for Defoe to complete his momentous three-timer four minutes from time.
The Tottenham striker suffered some kind of twinge as he celebrated and was immediately replaced by Ashley Young.
Capello was left to hope the recovery will be swift, and Defoe confirmed within minutes of the final whistle that he will be ready to face the Swiss.
What is your verdict on the performance? Have your say.

I mean ".....Milner average, what you would expect......." - was you watching the same game as me and the other millions or what ? And I don't say that with a City slant 'cos I have no gripes on another City player : "Barry.....average...." relating to same game, although in Barry's defence he's had a great start to season with City (where it matters).

Dead pleased for AJ getting the goal - do wonders for his confidence at international level.
Sorry how many City players started ? Remind me was it 3 or THREE ?
Sorry how many City players got minutes on pitch ? Remind me was it 4 or FOUR ?
Sorry how many City players scored a goal ? Remind me was it 1 or ONE ?

Yes it's only the start of qualifying period (next game on Tuesday) but it was nice to achieve a good result without conceding, the bonus being combination of mixing existing regular England players with the new Young breed.
Suppose, as usual, in the long term we'll more than likely qualify but it's transfering that form to tourno's and achieving stuff when it matters that we should be aiming for.
The obvious ommission from tonight's game was Terry & Lamps due to Injury.
We'll probably bring Terry back in ASAP as a necessity dependant on severity of Dawson's Injury, but if CAPELLO drafts Lamps back into starting 11 I will be disgusted, as it will shatter the hopes of certain other MF players who appear to feel they're part of the 11 to 13 bankers in the squad, as well as showing such players a total lack of respect.
COME ON ENGLAND !

Gerrard was great and seemed more comfortable in his position without the chelsea muppet, also Rooney was in better form his play making was excellent and totally unselfish which is what is needed in a team!
Defoe excellent also, all in all a good performance from the Red and Blue side of Manchester and from the Liverpool and Spurs quarter!
COME ON THE BOYS!!

Well done to Defoe and Johnson for the goals, EVERY one assisted by the mighty Rooney.
Go and put some salt and vinegar on that chip on your shoulder.

Central Defence, what a shambles in the 1st half. Dawson played like a Wardrobe and Jagielka (even taking into account he is a City fan) was awful, not much better in the second. Cahil looked the business when he came on. Personally, I would like to see Lescott given a chance in the next match alongside Cahill (rather than Upson), let's see. I remember when City were trying to buy Lescott, people wrote that tney thought that Jag's was the better player. Not on his last couple of outings he isn't!

Lets hope the two chelski pensioners are unfit for the whole of qualifying.
Giving the likes of Jagielka,Dawson and Cahill to shine.
And also releasing Rooney and Gerard to perform the roles they play for their clubs.

Thought Rooney was fairly poor in the first half. Capello had asked him to play in front of the 2 centre mf players - so what was he doing constantly picking up the ball outside his own area and generally getting in peoples way. Second half was better and a nice assists for Defoe's two goals but how he can claim an assist for AJ's goal when it was a pass from Defoe and space made by AJ?
Overall - Let's not get too carried away, there were some encouraging performances but the back 4 look dreadful at times. Jagielka & especially Dawson looked like the were walking on ice when they had the ball at their feet. Hart looked like a veteran in goal rather than playing his first competitive match. Very assured and confident.

Last night demonstrated that England don't have to depend on Lampard & Terry. Proof again that with Lampard and Gerard unable to play well together for England, then Stevie G is the only choice. Proof again that England is OK without Terry, with his arrogant sense of entitlement and indifferent international play. Proof again that England is OK without Ferdinand, with his injuries and lack of game time.
Last night demonstrated that England does have promising younger players who can contribute at this level; Hart, Adam Johnson, Walcott, Jagielka. And for the future there should be opportunities for Darren Bent and maybe Andy Carroll & Huddlestone.
To gamble & lose with the golden boys in SA was a bad bet. To gamble with the younger boys now is a better bet.

Great, that the United save England again PR, BS brainwashing out of the way.
I thought England looked comfortable all over the pitch last night and without being even a bit bias, (or totally bias depending on if you’re a city hater or not), I have to say I felt really proud to see the game finish with 4 City players playing for England.
I thought all the City lads contributed really well and if I could have my way I would have started with Adam Johnson in place of Walcott.
A note for Tuesday possibly Fabio?
I was really impressed with Phil Jagielka last night. No doubt if he played for the scum the media would be declaring him a legend by now. Mind you it looks like Jagielka likes playing for his country unlike the now I'm retired from international football, now it's someone else's fault, Scholls.
So well done to all those that don't mind playing for England on their performance’s last night it's good to see players pulling on the shirt and giving their all for their country.
More Adam Johnson please, Fabio.
Really well done Joe Hart, Gareth Barry and James Milner. Not forgetting Shaun Wright Philips and Jolean for turning out for your country.
