Seddon aiming for new deal

GARETH Seddon is certainly benefiting from Graham Barrow's "treat them mean, keep them keen" philosophy.

With no sign of a new deal for next season, Seddon is busting a gut to score the goals that will keep him at Gigg Lane.

He's got 11 for the season and eight in his last 12 matches, including the opener at York last Tuesday.

It will be a surprise if the 23-year-old Burnley lad isn't given at least a 12-month contract after proving his fitness and his ability to find the back of the net.

And it wouldn't be a shock either if he's partnering Gigg Lane old boy Jon Newby next term. Newby is on loan at York from Huddersfield where his career has gone into a tailspin since leaving the Shakers last summer.

And if he won't play him in division three, then Peter Jackson is unlikely to play him the second division if the Yorkshire side get promotion.

Barrow is a great admirer of the one-time Liverpool reserve and said: "I would definitely have him back at Gigg Lane, no problem. He is a quality player and I'm baffled how he didn't fit in alongside Jon Stead and Andy Booth at Huddersfield.

"His work ethic is excellent and I don't think you can have enough good strikers.

"Whether we will be able to do anything though, I'm not sure."

Newby would probably jump at the opportunity to return to Bury.

"I have got a great affinity with them," he said. "And I regard them as the team I support.

"When I went to Gigg Lane I was disillusioned with football at Liverpool but I learnt how to enjoy it again.

"I was at Bury for two and a half years and I loved every minute of it. Graham has got a very strong work ethic which he has instilled in the players."

Newby had an impressive game against his old club but it seems unlikely that he will remain at Bootham Crescent, even if York avoid relegation.

"I'm in a no-lose situation at York," he added. "I'm not here as a permanent squad member so I just have to go out and enjoy the games.

"I'm out to impress as many people as possible. Any striker wants to score goals no matter what team he is involved with and I'm no different."
