A GREAT afternoon for the Shakers but in particular a memorable afternoon for leading scorer Jon Newby.
After waiting to hit the back of the net since December 29, Newby's 11th goal of the campaign earned what turned out to be three hard-earned points.
And having also made the opening goal of a chance-filled match for Chris Billy, Newby certainly savoured his afternoon's work.
He'll now hope to make up for lost time in the remaining five matches of the season, starting with Carlisle next Saturday.
Bury should have won with more to spare against a side heading for the Nationwide Conference. But after dominating the opening period the Shakers had to soak up plenty of second half pressure.
And while Newby was man of the first 45 minutes Glynn Garner was the hero of the second half.
He couldn't do anything to prevent Steve Flack reducing Exeter's arrears after 51 minutes but he then made three vital stops including a close-range block to deny Sean Devine a 68th minute equaliser.
Bury also had opportunities of their own but in the end it didn't matter, the ball stayed out and hopefully now the Shakers can build on this performance in the remaining five games of the season.
Have your say on Bury beating Exeter
