But the Shakers boss, who is delighted with his team's 2-0 victory at home to Lincoln at the weekend is hopeful his players have what it takes to make the grade.
Preece knows that victory could lift his side to third in the table, and said: 'Irrespective of where people thought we might be at this stage of the season, the pressure does start to tell.
'I've got a lot of young players who have never been in this position before, so it is tough, but they are good enough to do it.
'Massive game'
'Every game is a big game now but this is massive.
'We had a disappointing result against them on the opening day of the season, but it's an exciting time for the club and we are looking forward to it.'
And Preece has been boosted by goalkeeping Glyn Garner recovering from a slight hamstring strain as they prepare to take on their fellow promotion hopefuls.
'Its great Glyn is back because we haven't got another keeper at the moment.'
However, Preece himself is still doubtful for the match having not managed to shake off a sickness bug.
Nugent set to start
David Nugent, who also had a similar illness, is likely to return to the side having fought back to nearly full fitness.
Preston loan striker Pawel Abbott is also expected to start for the Shakers and will be available to manager Preece up to the Darlington match later this season.
