And in so doing Lawson ensured Andy Preece's task of picking his squad for Saturday's FA Cup-tie against Plymouth is that bit harder.
The Huddersfield-born former Stockport striker didn't enjoy his time at Edgeley Park. But his return for a second stint at Gigg Lane hasn't exactly been a happy one either.
However, a 28th minute goal, totally against the run of play, put the smile back on his face.
"It was nice to be back with the lads and to get the winning goal means it was a perfect night," said the Bury hero.
Said Preece: "It wasn't just Ian who did well. Liam George, Steve Redmond, Kevin Nugent and Paul O'Shaughnessy all played their part. I'm delighted with their response."
