GLYNN Garner couldn't have chosen a better time to keep his first clean sheet of the season.

With Paddy Kenny finally departed for Sheffield United and his own form under scrutiny, the delighted Bury keeper capped a memorable week with a shut-out and the save of his life.

Onandi Lowe's third minute header would probably have nestled in the net had David Seaman been between the posts. But Garner swooped to deny the big striker and put the Shakers on the way to a 1-0 victory over high-riding Rushden.

There were plenty of anxious moments, both for the Welshman and his team mates, before the job was done. However, they got there in the end and Garner said: "We defended well as a team. As for the save I don't know whether it's my best. But I'll put it in the locker for the future.

"The ball came across from the left and I saw it late because the ball came out of the sun. Thankfully I just managed to push it away.

"It's always nice to get a clean sheet and hopefully I can get one or two more now. It's been a great week for me with Wales beating Italy. And I even had to wear a red shirt today because of the colour clash.

"I kissed it for luck before I went out. Maybe I'll have to wear it every week."

Danny Swailes, who together with Michael Nelson and Matt Barrass, was magnificent in defence also deserves a mention in despatches. His goal-line clearance in the second-half was every bit as important as Garner's save once Chris Billy's first-half goal put Bury ahead.

After the Shakers first league win in a month boss Andy Preece said: "I had 14 heroes out there."
