Bury

Bury 1 Shrewsbury Town 2

BURY went down to their third successive defeat as plucky Shrewsbury came out fighting with a terrific second-half display.

Keeper Alan Fettis saved one penalty - but was a bystander as Ben Davies scored twice, once from the spot, in a thrilling comeback.

The Shakers were indebted to Fettis as early as the first minute when he made a outstanding save from Ben Davies' curling free-kick. Moments later, Kelvin Langmead hit the outside of the post with a snap shot from six yards.

At the other end, John-Paul Pittman had a seemingly legitimate goal ruled out after he bundled home Marc Pugh's vicious swinging corner.

Bury continued to make the best chances and Andy Bishop was denied on 15 minutes by a good save on the line by Shrews' keeper Ryan Esson. Only some last-ditch defending then denied Pittman his second goal in a week, Richard Hope making the final clearance after a goalmouth scramble.

Whipped

Chris Casper's side got the goal they deserved on 33 minutes when Brian Barry-Murphy whipped a free-kick in from the left and John Fitzgerald got the final touch to guide it past Esson.

But it looked as if their hard work had been ruined when Barry-Murphy brought down Davies for a soft penalty on the stroke of half time. Sagi Burton took the spot kick, but found Fettis in irresistible form, palming the ball away to his left.

With the words of Gary Peters ringing in their ears, the Shrews clawed their way back into the game as Bury's impressive football started to dissolve.

Asamoah got round the back of Kennedy and delivered a low shot across the six yard box where Davies stabbed home at the far post.

Shrewsbury's comeback was complete 10 minutes later when Dave Edwards broke after a Bury corner and delivered a perfect ball to Davies. Challinor hacked the Shrews winger down, but somehow avoided a red card. Retribution, however, was swift as Davies picked himself up to slam the ball past Fettis from the spot.

Was your reporter at the match? Bury's impressive football? Shrewsbury's terrific fightback? Shrewsbury were gifted 2 penalties and scored their first goal from their only real constructive move of the whole game. As for Bury, well, beaten by another poor side. This is worse than last year. We are losing games which last year we picked points up in, the attendances are scarily low and we have no better players to call into the side. I say we write this season off and start building a side to get us back from the conference. Wycombe will be a horror story.
