FOR the second successive season Bury began their new campaign with a 2-1 defeat.

But manager Chris Casper will wonder how they didn't get at least a point for their first ever trip to the National Hockey Stadium.

For 54 minutes they played against 10 men after keeper Adolfo Baines was sent off by referee Ray Lee for a deliberate hand ball.

But two goals from striker Izale McCleod earned Martin Allen's new look Dons an opening day win.

Mcleod struck home a 59th minute penalty after a debut blunder by Alan Fettis. The former Northern Ireland international lost the ball on the edge of his own area and then felled former Rochdale man Clive Platt to give away the spot kick.

Fettis was lucky to stay on the pitch, Mr Lee showing only a yellow card.

The Shakers, with four players making their debuts, drew level 17 minutes from time. York City recruit Andy Bishop was brought down by Drissa Diallo and Bishop netted a debut goal from the spot.

That should have been good enough for a point but John Fitzgerald was caught in possession by McLeod who drove the ball in from 15 yards along the ground.

Bury pressed for a second equaliser but in a stormy seven minutes of stoppage time Barry Murphy had a shot saved by sub keeper Ade Bankole, Colin Woodthorpe suffered a serious facial injury while Shakers supporters clashed with home stewards to make it an afternoon to forget.
