The Shakers threw away a 2-0 lead in the closing minutes but a point was good enough to keep them up and see the Shakers end the season with only one defeat in 10 games.
At one stage though hosts County were just a goal away from dropping into the Conference had Oxford scored a late winner against Leyton Orient.
Despite being under early pressure Bury took the lead against the run of play just before half time. Dwayne Mattis, in for tonsillitis victim Dave Flitcroft, headed in a trademark near post goal to put Bury in command.
The visitors, who have played their best football away from Gigg Lane during their troubled season, made absolutely sure of their league place nine minutes from time.
Target
Substitute Tom Youngs was on target, much to the relief of manager Chris Casper and the band of loyal Bury fans.
Casper would have preferred an away victory to end the campaign but twice in the last four minutes the Magpies found the net to guarantee their own safety.
Dan Martin netted after 86 minutes and the home faithful went into raptures after Julian Baudet converted a penalty after keeper Casper Schmeichel had given away the spot kick.
Despite their great escape Bury have flirted with the relegation zone once again this term and Casper is aware it may not be third time lucky next season unless the Shakers perform much better in the first half of the year.
