Indeed, the Scottish-born midfielder, who graced Gigg Lane in the late 1970s, has often been an outspoken critic.
But McIlwraith has mellowed as the new season approaches and is predicting good times ahead for Graham Barrow's team.
"Last time there was a lot of optimism around the club that I didn't share. And I got into trouble because of it," said the Rochdale-based former Motherwell star.
"But the team finished where I and some other people thought they would.
"This time, though, I'm a lot more optimistic. Graham has got together a bigger side in terms of height and strength.
"And I've not seen a Bury back four as well organised as they have been this pre-season.
"Dave Challinor looks keen and mean and a lot of things come from him. We've lost Chris Porter and David Nugent, but Allan Smart will give the side some presence up front.
"Tom Youngs, another of the new signings, is a confidence player. And if the side gets off to a good start, then I'm sure we'll see the best of him."
ONE TO WATCH: "I know he hasn't signed a contract and I haven't seen a lot of him, but Jake Speight - on trial from Sheffield United - could do something. He reminds me a bit of Shaun Wright-Phillips."
PREDICTION: "Given a bit of luck with injuries and suspensions, then there's no reason why they can't push on even higher."
