Stay with the Shakers urges Bury striker Andy Bishop

Andy Bishop
Andy Bishop has urged Bury’s out-of-contract stars to commit their future to the club.

Two weeks ago the Shakers’ top scorer followed David Worrall and Steve Schumacher in signing new two-year deals until 2014.

Joe Skarz, Peter Sweeney and Mike Jones are now in advanced talks over extending their current deals, which expire at the end of the season.

And Bishop, 29, is eager to build a nucleus of players from last term’s promotion-winning side.

“This is a club where everybody enjoys coming in,” he said. “The training is good and it’s a good bunch of lads so I don’t see any reason why they shouldn’t sign.”

Bishop’s latest extension was his third since joining Bury from York in 2006 and was an easy decision.

“The chairman and manager would probably say it was the easiest negotiating they’ve ever done,” he added. “One of the main talking points was that we all think the club’s moving forward.

“Maybe not this season but in the next couple – if we get one or two more players – we can definitely push on again.”

After two seasons ravaged by injury, Bishop has re-established himself as Bury’s main goal threat following the sale of Ryan Lowe this summer.

The eight-goal striker has gone four games without scoring, though, and after losing 4-1 at Colchester last weekend he will look to bounce back at home to Uwe Rosler’s Brentford on Saturday.

“It’s disappointing what happened (with injuries) but I’ve got to forget about it and move on,” Bishop added.

“Last Saturday was a reality check. It shows we can’t drop our standards at all in this league.

“But we can beat anyone on our day so we’ll be looking to beat Brentford, even though they’re doing well.”
