Bury 2 Sheffield Wednesday 1

Bury’s Damien Mozika scores the second goal for the Shakers against Sheffield Wednesday during the first half at Gigg Lane last night

Bury were celebrating another famous victory last night as they upset League One promotion hopefuls Sheffield Wednesday at Gigg Lane.

The Shakers dumped Coventry out of the Carling Cup last week and produced another fine performance to register their first league win of the campaign.

Talismanic striker Ryan Lowe gave the League One new boys a dream start, heading home his fourth goal of the season in the sixth minute.

Damien Mozika claimed a deserved second for Bury four minutes before the break as the Shakers applied themselves superbly after Saturday’s home defeat by Carlisle.

Wednesday pulled one back a minute after half-time to set up a thrilling second half.

But the visitors didn’t do enough to merit a draw, with Bury threatening to make a famous victory even more emphatic late on. The Shakers made a flying start and were rewarded when Dave Worrall whipped in a fine cross from the right and Lowe was left unmarked to head home.

Wednesday were forced into a reshuffle as they lost defender Rob Jones to injury and new signing Chris O’Grady soon followed – with no apparent injury.

Andy Bishop headed wide from Lowe’s cross as Bury remained on top, although Wednesday then spurned a great chance as Lewis Buxton fired wide.

Lowe was denied a penalty as sub Reda Johnson clattered into his back but the Shakers doubled their lead moments later with Worrall again the architect after being switched to the left.

The winger found Mozika in the left channel and the tenacious midfielder flicked it past Danny Batth before calmly sidefooting home.

Wednesday replied right after the restart, Chris Sedgwick cutting in from the left and curling past Cameron Belford.

The Bury fans were relieved to see Gary Madine have a goal disallowed for offside before the Wednesday striker volleyed over.

But the Shakers were by no means under the cosh as Lowe fired wide from inside the box.

A Wednesday clearance then came out as far as Mozika, who hit a 25- yard volley agonisingly wide. Worrall might have added a late third as he spurned a fine opening and Bury cruised home as the expected late onslaught never came from Wednesday.

Bury boss Richie Barker paid tribute to his players, saying: "Every one of them was absolutely fantastic.

"I’m a Wednesday fan but I put the team on the board before the game and said ‘Look, there’s no household names in there’.

"You’ve got to play against the team that’s out there and we did that superbly.

"We’ve now had three fantastic games and one blip – I’ll take that for the next 40 games."

Great job to come back with a good win after Saturday's disappointment. I think this result augurs well for Bury's league one adventure because it shows the lads can indeed perform against some of the best teams in the division. Could Richie Barker be the latest young rising star in football league management?! I thought he may not be the man for the job, but I'm more than happy to end up eating my words! However, just one worry... with a squad that lacks depth in certain departments, any injuries could be a big problem as the season progresses. As an "exile", I'd be interested to know what any other Bury fans (who are able to watch them play!) think about the season so far and the Shakers' future prospects for the remainder of the campaign.

This was a fine win for Bury and a great way to dispel any lingering doubts about our ability to compete at this level after the abject performance on Saturday. In reply to your question Billy the lack of strength in depth is an obvious concern but with a little bit of luck on the injury front and if we can hold on to the likes of Mozika, I see no reason why we should be able to remain in this league.

A great result but with recent injury setbacks this might be the exception to the norm. The Bury fans seem to drifting away from the club again after the recent 2 defeats against plucky Leicester City & Charlton, keep the faith and i just hope we can hold on to our better players.
