Bury

Bury 0 Port Vale 1

A new look Bury side opened their League Two campaign with a narrow defeat at Gigg Lane.

Shakers boss Alan Knill gave starting debuts to six players and made one – Steven Schumacher – captain in the absence of the injured Ben Futcher.

But it was the visitors who claimed the spoils with a goal from Lee Collins in the 64th minute.

Collins blasted home from 10 yards after a corner was not cleared and the ball fell invitingly to him in front of goal.

Bury were the better side in the first half but could not pierce a robust Vale defence.

And the closest they came to an equaliser was from Ryan Lowe, who headed wide from eight yards in the 80th minute after a good cross from the bye line by Andy Bishop.
