STRIKER Jon Newby is relishing the prospect of playing for Bury again.

Newby left Gigg Lane to join Huddersfield Town for the start of last season, but struggled to maintain a first-team place at the McAlpine Stadium after picking up an injury.

Now he has returned to the Shakers and says it's good to be back.

"When you first leave the club, you think it's going to be a bed of roses, but I was very sad to leave Bury," said Newby. "I started well at Huddersfield and scored a few goals, but then I was injured. The manager signed a few new players, which made it difficult for me to get in the side.

"But I've always stayed in touch with the lads at Bury and been down to watch the boys a few times."

A fans' favourite during his first spell at the club, Newby received a hostile reception when he returned to Gigg Lane last season with his new club, but he believes that frosty reception is water under the bridge.

"I've always enjoyed playing at Bury and I didn't want to leave, but I took the chance to play for Huddersfield because of certain situations," added Newby.

"But I did stop enjoying playing football at Huddersfield and now I want to get back to enjoying it again at Bury."

And Newby believes Graham Barrow's side has an excellent chance of reaching the play-offs this season.

"Graham's done well to sign Graham Jones and Dave Challinor, they are both good players," said Newby. "We've lost a lot of players, which is a shame, but there are a few kids, who were 17 and 18 when I left the club, that will be coming through the ranks.

"It's going to be difficult because there aren't many funds available, but I'm confident we can have a good season."
