It took only four months for a string of disastrous results to ruin York's 82-year history as a league side.
And Bury boss Barrow believes the Shakers were nearer to the drop than many fans may have realised.
"Everybody should learn from what has happened to York," says Barrow who, along with Kelham O'Hanlon, did well to stop Bury dropping into the Conference.
"We just about got away with it by the skin of our teeth. It may not have looked that close to some people, but believe you me it was.
"Some of the results could have gone either way and that would have brought problems. York thought they were home and dry. But they allowed a few players to go when they should have perhaps been looking at pushing on for the play-offs.
"It's a big warning. Half the league could have been in trouble had York got a couple more wins recently.
"Fortunately, we had 51 points when Dave Challinor had to go back to Stockport. And in the main we were lucky with injuries.
"It might have been a different story had we got the injuries we have at the moment. "You only have to look at the Conference to know how hard it is to come straight back into the league.
"Hereford have got 90 odd points and they're not even guaranteed promotion. Look at Exeter.
"They went down last season and haven't even made the play-offs."
Barrow will name his retained list after Saturday's final game of the season against Macclesfield Town.
However, it's unlikely he will operate with the same sized squad as predecessor Andy Preece.
"I just want enough options and strength in depth to cover any situation. That builds up a better team spirit.
"We don't want players who are hit and miss. They've got to be able to come in and do a job straight away."
