MIDFIELDER Mike Jones believes continuing to grab the first goal could be crucial to Bury's promotion hopes this season.

The Shakers have failed to win just two of the 10 games in which they have opened the scoring, and none of their eight league and cup defeats have come after taking the lead.

Jones headed a 35th-minute opener at Accrington on Saturday with Brian Barry-Murphy doubling Bury's lead just three minutes later and Alan Knill's men stood firm to secure a comfortable 2-1 victory.

Jones reckons Bury are at their strongest when they have something to hold on to and that could be a key factor in whether they can maintain their promotion challenge after climbing back into the play-off places.

"When we get the first goal we can afford to sit back sometimes because I think the defence is very solid," he said.

Ability

"If we didn't win at Accrington, then the Gillingham win doesn't look as good so it was great to get back-to-back wins.

"We knew what that it was never going to be easy and was never going to be a footballing match and we had to dig in.

"We were always going to be holding on in the second- half and we did the job, we got the three points and that's the main thing."

Bury's ability to `shut up shop' seems to suit playing away from home as they have lost just one and won five of their nine league games on the road so far.

They have another short trip this Saturday to Macclesfield, where victory could send the Shakers back up to second position in League Two.

"We're back in the play-offs so hopefully we can stay there this time," added Jones.

"It's another local derby and we'll fancy ourselves to go there and do the same job.

"They've hit some good form so it'll be a tough game, as Accrington was, but we fancy ourselves away from home."
