BURY defender Efe Sodje is relishing a reunion with Gillingham manager Mark Stimson in the FA Cup clash at Gigg Lane.

Sodje was frozen out by Stimson when he took charge of the Gills a year ago before the former Nigeria international was loaned out to Bury.

The 36-year-old has since enjoyed a new lease of life at Gigg Lane and has become a lynchpin in the Shakers' defence after making a permanent switch in the summer.

"His (Stimson's) first comment to me was 'I hate you', and he'd never met me before, so obviously I have no respect for him," said Sodje.

"I didn't ask him to kiss my feet and I didn't show any sign of me being big-time. I just went into training and did my normal job. All the clubs I've been at, I've always given my heart out, you can ask any manager I've played for.

Respect

"I don't have a single thing to prove to him. He calls himself a manager but, for me, he's not a manager. Why should I call him a manager?

"I know people say I shouldn't go slagging somebody off but if you speak to other players that left Gillingham I think they'd say the same thing about him.

"I've played for at least eight managers, and I'm talking about real good managers like Sammy McIlroy, Peter Jackson, Lennie Lawrence and Dario Gradi - these people have made football.

"You earn respect as a manager by giving out respect and you don't play for people who disrespect you. You want to play for someone that wants you, and that's what I did.

"Alan Knill is totally different. He respects everybody and listens to players. He cares, and players always want to go to places where people care. That makes you want to give your all.

"I still feel young and as long as the manager I play for now is happy with me, that's fine for me."

Sodje and Stephen Dawson are set to return after being suspended for the midweek Johnstone's Paint Trophy defeat at Darlington, while Brian Barry-Murphy should start despite an eye injury.
