Damien Mozika capitalised on a sloppy first half by the Shakers to give the hosts a 38th-minute lead.
Andy Bishop equalised with a 46th-minute penalty, and although he and Andy Morrell spurned chances to claim all three points, Knill was at least pleased to remain unbeaten.
"We made it difficult for ourselves," he said. "First half was probably our worst performance since I've been here and second half was one of the best.
"We win a few games, we're unbeaten, and all of a sudden we think we're Real Madrid. Individuals wanted to do their own thing and subsequently you get punished.
"It's a big lesson for the players that if we have a game-plan, stick to it. If you listen to what we're telling you, you'll get better - if you want to do things your own way, you won't.
"But we put it right at half-time, said what we had to say, and to pull our way back from a really poor first-half performance was a big positive.
"I was delighted with that response," Knill said. "Once we moved it wide we looked dangerous every time we had it, we were more solid at the back, and we could have won it comfortably."
