ANDY Bishop's return to action brought the biggest cheer of the afternoon in Bury's deserved victory.

Last season's 21-goal top-scorer hasn't played since last April due to a knee injury.

There were fears the former York City striker might miss Saturday's League Two opener at Milton Keynes.

But Bishop completed 23 minutes and hit the bar in an impressive Shakers' performance against their Championship opposition.

Indeed, Bury's display throughout earned a great ovation from the appreciative home fans.

Industrious Richie Baker turned first-half pressure into a deserved 35th minute opener following excellent approach by enthusiastic Nicky Adams.

And Dave Challinor smashed in a superb left-foot volley just after the interval to earn Chris Casper's team its first home win since last December.

"It's great to see Andy back," enthused Casper.

Boost

"It gives everyone a boost, the fans, myself and the other players.

"You want quality like Bish on the field."

Goalscorer Baker added: "His goals, more or less, kept us up last season. So, now he's fit again it will get us buzzing."

There was also a first look at Bishop's new strike partner, James Dean, a giant centre-forward who is bound to get on the end of corners.

Formerly with Clitheroe and Northwich and previously on trial at Halifax, the 6ft 5ins frontman has been handed a 12-month contract.

Much-travelled Marcus Richardson showed up well after being handed a short-term trial.

"James is an old fashioned kind of centre-forward, he's good in the air and holds up play well," added Casper.

"Marcus isn't easy to play against and he gave us a physical presence as well.

"I'm pleased with how pre-season has gone and it gives us confidence going into Milton Keynes next week.

"We're injury-free and we're looking strong and fit."
