The Shakers slipped to an agonising derby day defeat to Rochdale at Gigg Lane on Saturday.
And to make life even more difficult, their second defeat in four days over the Easter weekend has left their League Two survival hopes hanging in the balance.
Former Stockport and Rochdale midfielder Rickie Lambert did the damage with two goals - one either side of half time as Chris Casper’s struggling team failed to contend their hosts.
“We started off quite brightly when John Fitzgerald headed against the bar, but after that we didn’t play that great,” reflected a downbeat Casper.
“As I said before, if you can get the first goal it can change the whole complexion of the match.
“The first goal was a really bad goal to concede and it stemmed from a long ball into the box which we didn’t deal with.”
The defeat has left Casper’s men languishing in 19th place in the league standings, just three points from the drop-zone.
Bright
And with four games still left in the domestic programme, the Shakers have it all to do if they are going to guarantee their Football League survival.
“We started the second half much brighter than we did the first, but their second goal stopped us in our tracks, “ conceded Casper.
“We’ve got four games left now and all the players know we’ve got to keep working hard to guarantee we stay up.”
Lambert gave Rovers the perfect start with a fierce strike in the 28th minute.
Bury were caught napping at the back and Lambert raced on to Lewis Haldane’s clever flick-on, before composing himself to fire past Bury keeper Andy Warrington.
Casper made one forced change to the side that lost to ‘Dale at the weekend with John Fitzgerald in for the suspended Darren Kempson.
The big defender headed against the crossbar in the third minute after a dangerous corner from midfielder David Buchanan.
But that was as good as it got for the visitors as Lambert secured the points for the home side shortly after the hour mark, again beating Warrington with a rasping drive.
Jason Kennedy saw a shot saved by Steve Phillips, while leading scorer Andy Bishop fired wide as Bury looked for an equaliser.
But Rovers could have won by more if Warrington had not saved well from Chris Carruthers, as well as denying Lambert his hat-trick late in the action.

bury are the worst and they will go to the relegation zone!
I am not quite sure whether Chris Casper has actually been at the last 20 odd games. His comments suggest he hasnt. This is the worst Bury team it has been my displeasure to sit and watch. 4 home wins from 21 matches sums it all up. There are no positives whatsoever to be taken from any Home game since December, we have been absolutely awful. It is simply astonishing that we have not yet been relegated, how can there be any teams worse?? As for Rochdale, they were only very very slightly better and it was pleasing to see Barnet, one of the many Jeckyl and Hyde teams in this league, wipe their smiles off yesterday. One goal in the last 6 home games - shocking- I missed the Shrewsbury game when Bishop and Hurst were 'unplayable' according to Casper. Didnt even notice them on the pitch on Saturday. We have 4 ganes left and 3 of those, Swindon, Walsall and Stockport dont have 'points' written on them, even Mansfield at home seems difficult and I wouldnt like to need a win or even a draw in that game to stay up.
I agree with the previous comments, i believe this is deffinitely the worst team to wear the Bury shirt and they seem to lack any pride or die for the cause, they seem to accept the abject misery which envelopes the team when they play at home, thank goodness for the away form 8 wins now what's going on?
Chris casper may be the directors choice but i aint no fan of his, his interests seem more linked outside the club like last season he attended a MUFC 1990 facup get together instead of preparing his team for the home clash with Posh, then he becomes the first manager to have us thrown out of the facup a decision which badly affected moral at the club as well as deny it desperately needed cash for a good cup run, we will never know if we would have beaten Ipswich i guess not given our poor home form.
It's time to get rid of him whether we stay up or drop down, no doubt our fat check from the sale of David Nugent when he leaves pne in the summer can be used to pay this waste of space off, Casper "you never stood a ghost of a chance at Bury, bring on stan back home"
Why don't all you muppets lay off Casper!! Bury are 1 of the poorest clubs in the football league, given that he is the youngest of all 92 managers and this is his first managerial job, then lets get behind the lad and cheer the boys on, and keep them in the football league!! Instead of all u waste of spacers slaggin the manager off!!
Well Hughsie some of your comments are correct BURY are indeed one of the poorest clubs in the land but that is only down to bad mismanagement throughout the seasons after they were promoted to the dizzy heights of the championship,< can you remember that far back or were you still in your dipers?
In 1997 we were promoted to the big time, then a little known small time businessman was allowed to buy our club jumping on to the gravy train he took our club for nearly ?4 million from the sales of our most prestigious players, then his business went bust and Bury nearly went belly up 4 years later but were saved by a fantastic campaign which raised enough funds to keep the club going the rest is history we still have a club.
As for muppets well CASPER is the biggest muppet he inspires nobody with confidence, take a look at THE CHRIS COLEMAN SACKING he is young yet like chris inept and we will go nowhere with him at the helm.
I am perfectly entitled to my opinions. Clearly the Chester fiasco, in which Mr Casper, by his own admission, played a big part, was the turning point of the season, the fact that we beat Stockport fairly easily the following Saturday was only down to us not knowing about our fate. The players are clearly not giving 100% and it is down to them and the manager to put things right, I can only provide support on match days and there are only so many insipid displays that I can reasonably be expected to endure before I ask questions. It is now mid April and we have not seen a victory at Gigg Lane since mid December. The manner of the draws and numerous defeats has been at times ridiculous, embarrassing or/and demoralising, sometimes all three. The results do indeed speak for themselves, this is the worst team ever to play in our colours. The players are lucky, they can go elsehwere in May, we are stuck with this. The loan players havent added anything to what we had, unlike last season when they dug us out of the hole. Heaven help us - and a victory at Boston doesnt make a summer.
Edwards you are quite correct with your comments i suspect some of these players just feel sorry for themselves and look on with envy when they see other quality players like whaley and nugent move on to pastures new.
When i have watched The shakers in home matches over the last 28 years i have noticed an atmosphere of disenchantment by the supporters and a huge lack of self belief and almost redicule to any meaningful achievement that the club may achieve yes i believe some of the supporters do infact treat whoever plays for the club with derisory laughter.
We don't get the breaks ie penalties or free kicks because we are regarded as minnows in footbal fraternity,i still can't believe that one of our 5 wins at home this season was against the team that now occupies top spot in the championship.
The club need it's supporters and it also needs for them something to believe in not just seasons of struggle to stay in the league year in year out, we haven't had a good season since our first in this league and at one point this season we were up to 8th after our win against wrexham but didn't push on that's caspers fault as we haven't been ravaged with injuries.
Look at Boston their players haven't been paid for last month yet they show the character to beat macc 4-1.
At least we have avoided our worst run in history just but yet enjoyed our best run 6 wins on the bounce so there must be some hope even if players like Pugh refuse to sign up for next season,i won't be disappointed if he lets the whole squad leave, give the kids a chance or they will all end up with cheap transfers like the lad who went to wba.
