Sam Allardyce's never-say-die side blasted back from 2-0 down to grab a draw and a precious point in their battle for Premiership survival.
It puts the destiny of the Championship in United's hands as they go in today's (Sunday) game at Tottenham two points clear with three games to play.
Arsenal appear to have the game wrapped up at Bolton when Syvain Wiltord and Robert Pires put them in charge, but Youri Djorkaeff and a Martin Keown own goal came in the space of twelve momentus minutes which could decide where the championship trophy finishes.
It also put Bolton five points clear of West Ham who play at Manchester City today.
'Glad to do United a favour'
Allardyce said: 'I haven't had Sir Alex on the phone yet! I am glad we have been able to do them a favour but really I was only interested in us doing one for ourselves.
'We are in the box seat now as far as staying up is concerned.
'Now we have got to hope that City do us a favour because the possibilities of West Ham winning there are very good as they have only lost once in seven games.'
A City victory would leave West Ham, under caretaker manager Trevor Brooking, needing to win their last two games at home to Chelsea and away to Birmingham to have any chance of staying up.
Bolton finished their fixtures with a trip to Southampton next Saturday and home to Middlesborough a fortnight today.
Have your say on a great result for Greater Manchester football.
