It gave the home side a crucial win in their battle to qualify for the Champions League next season.
Bolton could have few complaints, despite their spirited performance, as keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen had to make three storming saves in the second half.
He saved brilliantly when Hasselbaink tried to lob him after a mistake by Anthony Barness after 69 minutes and within seconds, went full stretch to deny Cole.
Then 10 minutes later he defied Hasselbaink again when the striker got clear as Bolton pressed forward in desperate search of an equaliser.
It almost came during the three minutes added, as Bolton's grandstand finish saw John Terry clear off the line from Henrik Pedersen.
Cole's vital goal came when Emmanuel Petit sent him clear with a great ball from the centre circle and he beat Jaaskelainen despite a despairing last ditch tackle by Gudni Bergsen.
It ended Bolton's run of three wins without conceding a goal but their overall performance means that they can go into the rest of their Premiership matches with plenty of confidence. Tweet
