Bolton Wanderers

Preview: Chelsea v Bolton Wanderers

BOLTON are riding high on a wave of fresh confidence that has made them believe what was almost unbelievable two months ago.

Keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen and midfield inspiration Jay-Jay Okocha reckon that Wanderers can continue their Premiership survival campaign by getting something out of tomorrow's (Saturday) game at Chelsea.

The Stamford Bridge club are chasing hard for a Champions League place next season so their foot will be hard down on the accelerator.

Defensive duty

But four wins and two draws in seven games have given Sam Allardyce's side a new belief and confirmed the manager's view that his side would come on strong at the end of the season.

Finnish international Jaaskelainen has kept three clean sheets in a row to equal last season's total of seven.

He has enjoyed a watching brief of Bolton's improvement that he feels has much to do with the arrival of Florent Laville from Lyon in January to partner Gudni Bergsson at the heart of the defence.

Jaaskelainen said: 'Florent has been absolutely superb but the whole team is doing well. We are playing in the right areas now and that's in the opposition's half. It took us 20 minutes to wake up against City last week but then we did very well.

'We have six games to go and hopefully we can get a point a game which should be enough to keep us up. It's good for my own confidence to be keeping clean sheets.

'Going to be tight'

'It's still going to be tight but winning the last three games has given us a lot of confidence. We can go to Chelsea to enjoy the game and, hopefully, get something out of it.'

Jaaskelainen, who is also enjoying the skills and trickery of midfield inspiration Jay-Jay Okocha, added: 'He's superb. Jari Litmanen is a good player in our Finland team.

'He has a lot of tricks but not as many as Jay-Jay. I don't know where he finds them and it's great for the fans to see. But all I want really is for us to keep the ball.'

Manager Sam Allardyce is set to keep faith with the team that beat Manchester City, with the attacking threat coming from Jay-Jay Okocha, Youri Djorkaeff and the resurgent Henrik Pedersen.

However, the midfield and defence have bene equally important and Ivan Campo's move into midfield has given the Trotters a solidity that was previously looking. With essentially three centre halves on the pitch, Bolton are now strong down their spine and will provide a stern test for Claudi Ranieri's Euro hopefuls.

The Blues, though, have themselves found uncharacteristic resilience this season and with Gianfranco Zola defying the ageing process will be hopeful of picking up a win to keep rivals Everton and Liverpool at bay.

Key Clash: Frank Lampard v Ivan Campo

Lampard's football has gone to another level since signing for Chelsea, but he is still someway short of being a genuine international class central midfielder. If he is to make the step up to England regular he'll have to prove that he's able to dominate games, not just perform adequately.

Against Bolton he will be charged with breaking forward to stop the attack, but he'll come up against one of the wiliest players in the game. Campo has played at the top level for Real Madrid and could perhaps teach the young pretender a thing or two ' starting on Saturday.
