Bolton had taken the lead after 19 minutes through Henrik Pedersen, who tapped in at the far post after Russell Hoult had failed to hold a cross shot from the left by Youri Djoraeff.
And the Trotters rode their luck in the first half as West Brom had three penalty appeals turned down, much to the annoyance of home manager Gary Megson. Bolton had to survive almost incessant West Brom pressure during the second half and seemed to have done well until the last gasp.
Pounced on loose ball
Then, Johnson pounced on a loose ball at Jussi Jaaskelainen's right hand post to score at close range.
It was tough on Jaasekelainen who had made a stunning save five minutes earlier after West Brom substitute Lee Hughes had broken clear.
And it was tough on Allardyce who was keen for a win not only to help Bolton up the table, but also for personal revenge having been sacked during a spell with the Baggies.
But, despite the disappointment of the late goal, Bolton could still be happy with a point especially in view of the results for the other teams down in the basement with them.
A point gained or two dropped? Have your say.
