Bolton Wanderers

Preview: Bolton v Sunderland

BOLTON manager Sam Allardyce is set to freshen up his squad for the visit of Sunderland in an attempt to shake off the disappointment of their midweek FA Cup exit.

The extra-time defeat at West Ham was draining both physically and mentally, according to Allardyce, and Joey O'Brien, Bruno N'Gotty and Hidetoshi Nakata are all in line for a return against the Barclays Premiership's bottom club.

Henrik Pedersen, a substitute at Upton Park, is pushing for a starting place but forward El-Hadji Diouf has still not sufficiently recovered from a double hernia.

Meanwhile, Gary Breen returns to the Sunderland squad after serving a one-match ban - but he will have to be content with a place on the substitute bench.

Caretaker manager Kevin Ball sticks with Steve Caldwell and Danny Collins at the heart of the defence but will almost certainly have to make a change with Julio Arca struggling to overcome a hamstring injury.

Dan Smith has been recalled from a loan spell at Huddersfield and stands by for his Premiership debut while defender Neill Collins is also added to the squad after returning from Sheffield United.

Overconfidence is foolishness against Sunderland, their league position must be disregarded, utterly. Only 100% effort will win us a UEFA place. Kevin Davis works hard, but he must get the ball in the back of the net more often.
