The 33-year-old, who was released by Leicester at the end of last season, will provide back-up for Wanderers number one Jussi Jaaskelainen.
Walker, who began his career with Tottenham, will join the Bolton squad in time for the club's Far East tour of Thailand and Japan.
Manager Sam Allardyce told the club's official website www.bwfc.co.uk: "It has been a frustrating time of late but having said that, I am delighted that we have acquired a goalkeeper of Ian Walker's ability.
"The goalkeeping area did concern me at the end of the season, but we now have three quality `keepers that will match any other team in the Premiership. Competition for places is going to be healthy."
Walker, who has four England caps, is Allardyce's second goalkeeper signing this summer after Oman international Ali Al-Habsi, but he has to stay at his Norwegian club FC Lyn until December. Tweet
