Bolton Wanderers

Portsmouth 1 Bolton Wanderers 1

BOLTON Wanderers are in Europe for the first time in their 131-year history.

They booked a place in the UEFA Cup with a draw at Fratton Park as Middlesbrough ended Tottenham's hopes by beating them at the Riverside.

It was a goal by controversial striker, El Hadji Diouf, which put Bolton on the way to capping a brilliant season.

He received a poor reception from home fans following the infamous spitting incident with Portsmouth captain Arjan De Zeeuw at the Reebok last November and the home captain refused to shake hands with him before the game.

But Diouf silenced his critics with an eleventh minute goal when he cashed in on defensive slackness to go round Dejan Stefanovic in the right side of the box before scoring with a low cross shot.

Bolton were the better side for most of the match but, as in recent games, they failed to cash in and Portsmouth equalised after 73 minutes when Yakubu forced home a free kick from close range.

Diouf missed the final moments for Bolton as he was substituted with six minutes to go, presumably because manager, Sam Allardyce, saw fit to play safe after the striker had been booked for a foul and mobbed by home players.

Superb season capped off with a uefa place
I forgive the pundit who said "bolton in europe this season? ...only on a saga holiday" (anyone know a contact number for rodney marsh?)
P.S
Good luck to city next week (5 north west teams out of 7 in europe would shut up the biased southern press)

A fantastic achievement considering Alardyce has spent so little in the transfer market. Not so many years ago we were in division 4, now were in europe, not bad for a little club in Lancashire.
