Bolton Wanderers' Stuart Holden ruled out for six months

INJURY BLOW: Stuart Holden is stretchered from the Old Trafford pitch

Bolton's American international Stuart Holden won't play again until next season.

The Wanderers midfielder injured his knee in a challenge with Manchester United's Jonny Evans in Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Old Trafford.

He has been ruled out for six months and will miss the club's FA Cup semi-final against Stoke at Wembley on April 17.

Holden needed 26 stitches in the horror wound.

"Stuart will get all the time and support that he needs," said manager Owen Coyle.

"He has been outstanding for me this season and has shown to be  one of the best midfielders in the Premier League."

Holden will also miss his country's Gold Cup campaign in June.

The midfielder said on his Twitter feed on Monday: "Just had a sincere phone call from Jonny Evans wishing me the best in my recovery, def wasn't intentional, just unfortunate part of the game."

What do you think? Have your say.

It's about time Owen Coyle stops being so pally with his scottish pal Fergie.
It was a shocking tackle by Evans and Coyle say's it was a full blooded tackle.Me thinks he is after the Salford United job.

First of all, best of luck to Stuart Holden, i hope it's just a flesh wound like Nani's.

Regarding the tackle, it was a full-blooded challenge from both players, both going in to win the ball.

Anything can happen when two players do that, (note: "Two" players)

everyone moans that tackles are being taken out of the game, then when someone gets hurt everyone starts criticising players for doing it.

The sending off was harsh... Fact is, if both players would have got up unmarked, the ref would have done nothing.

The way the game is going i can see a black and yellow card coming into to game where the ref has decided the tackle is worthy of a health and safety compo claim!!!!

Utd's silence is almost deafening.

When Nani suffer his scratch at Anfield it was complete condemnation of the opponent but when one their own carries out an even worse foul then it's complete silence or platitudes like it was a 50/50 ball;both players were fully committed;etc..
Lets see if an apology comes out of OT particularly from JE or SAF.

I'm a United fan but thought it was a dangerous tackle. Evans shouldn't have jumped into it like he did and the consequence of the tackle shows that the referee was correct in sending him off. Both players did however go in in a similar fashion, but I felt Evans' approach was slightly higher than Holden who was more sideways on with his tackle. Nevertheless Holden was also going in dangerously as well it must be said. THis is nothing like the Carragher challenge for me as that was not a 50/50 or loose ball like this one. That was a senseless tackle where the ball was already at Nani's feet and was obviously not a 50/50 like this one. That's the difference. Plus Carraghers was a lot higher. We send our best wishes to Holden for his recovery.

Wonder what Nani thought of his teammate's tackle then???
(So six months against 10 days. Yes I'm sure Kenny & Jamie Carragher are having a "wry smile" at United's usual hypocrisy!!)

This is no time for reds+blues to have sly little digs at each other, regarding this tackle that tackle. I hope i speak for all decent fan's on both sides when i say "get well soon son, and have a speedy recovery "

Great to hear Jonny Evans making such a gesture. Take back my previous post and congratulate him on his manly behaviour.

Good luck to Stuart on his recovery.
